Editorial Reviews

After 12 years of thinking about it (and waiting for movie technology to catch up with his visions), James Cameron followed up his unsinkable Titanic with Avatar, a sci-fi epic meant to trump all previous sci-fi epics. Set in the future on a distant planet, Avatar spins a simple little parable about greedy colonizers (that would be mankind) messing up the lush tribal world of Pandora. A paraplegic Marine named Jake (Sam Worthington) acts through a 9-foot-tall avatar that allows him to roam the planet and pass as one of the Na’vi, the blue-skinned, large-eyed native people who would very much like to live their peaceful lives without the interference of the visitors. Although he’s supposed to be gathering intel for the badass general (Stephen Lang) who’d like to lay waste to the planet and its inhabitants, Jake naturally begins to take a liking to the Na’vi, especially the feisty Neytiri (Zoë Saldana, whose entire performance, recorded by Cameron’s complicated motion-capture system, exists as a digitally rendered Na’vi). The movie uses state-of-the-art 3D technology to plunge the viewer deep into Cameron’s crazy toy box of planetary ecosystems and high-tech machinery. Maybe it’s the fact that Cameron seems torn between his two loves–awesome destructive gizmos and flower-power message mongering–that makes Avatar’s pursuit of its point ultimately uncertain. That, and the fact that Cameron’s dialogue continues to clunk badly. If you’re won over by the movie’s trippy new world, the characters will be forgivable as broad, useful archetypes rather than standard-issue stereotypes, and you might be able to overlook the unsurprising central plot. (The overextended “take that, Michael Bay” final battle sequences could tax even Cameron enthusiasts, however.) It doesn’t measure up to the hype (what could?) yet Avatar frequently hits a giddy delirium all its own. The film itself is our Pandora, a sensation-saturated universe only the movies could create. –Robert Horton

Sony BRAVIA DAV-HDX589W Review

Finally found the One, This Home theater system is great. The wireless system is nearly perfect, so far only a couple of weird click noises, but I have been using this 24/7 and it has worked beautifully. The design is really elegant for the price. Before getting this system I tried a Panasonic SC-PT660 5 DVD Home Theater System, the Sony BRAVIA DAV-HDX587WC 5.1 Channel Theater System and the Sony HSS360 component system. And this system beats all of them by a mile. Highly Recommended.

My First Surround Sound System, I researched and viewed surround sound systems for weeks and weeks. I went to stores, priced them out, compared Samsung’s to Sony’s, and Wal-Mart’s to Best Buy’s. I did my much needed research before actually picking the #1 rated Sony surround sound system on Amazon.

First off, let me say this; out of all the reviews I read I never found the answer to this question before actually pulling it out of the box myself. You are NOT able to use these speakers on a different receiver. Sony uses plastic ends on their speakers for easy set-up making these speakers “un-compatible” with other systems. (I am not saying you can’t just strip those off, but you will be unable to use them with this system again when you do). This also means your own speakers you have at home will not be able to hook up to the system this comes with.

That being said, you do get a very very nice all-in-one package, but you are not able to upgrade later with better or bigger speakers or a new receiver. Past that, everything in the box seems to be very high quality. Sony does put quality into their speakers, and puts a ton of punch in a little box.

I am not a guru on surround sound or anything like that, but I was easily able to get everything set-up and working quickly. The S-Air function seems to work perfectly fine in my household. I didn’t do anything fancy, I just did a auto setup, and it worked fine. Also, I found if you actually read through the handbook that came with it, you are able to adjust the volume of each speaker individually based on your preference and taste.

After feeling assured that a lot of the negative reviews I read was not an issue here in my home, I went on to the main (and final) issue I was worried about; The fact there are not many outputs or inputs on this device.

I was worried about this, because I have a PS3, 360, Wii, heck even a SNES hooked up to my HDTV and wanted everything to play out of all my speakers. I read the manual a little bit and my problem was solved instantly. “If you have an Optical Out or Aux Out on your TV, the surround sound system will work with all devices hooked up to the TV”. This meant that my PS3, Xbox 360, the TV itself, and even my SNES all work out of my 5.1. This was my only other concern when buying this system, as I was worried about not enough inputs. **Also, I did test my bluray movies on the PS3 by directly hooking up the PS3 to the TV, and the TV to the System. It sounded just as good as if I just hooked it directly to the sound system itself**

Overall if you are just jumping into surround sound, and you want an “all-in-one” theater experience from the get-go this is the system for you. It will make your room sound like a movie theater if you want it to, and it works perfect in the “night mode” if you don’t want to disturb neighbors. If you are going to be planning on upgrading to bigger speakers, or a bigger receiver than I suggest maybe looking elsewhere. I think anyone would be happy with this system at under $400.00.

very happy with Sony BRAVIA DAV-HDX589W, could not have been easier to set up. the sound is awesome……I used an optical cord from a blueray player to the receiver input and an HDMI from the blueray to the 1080 HDTV. this thing shakes the room! You will hear some of the “smallest” sounds recorded in the video. This was a VERY good choice….and thanks to the other reviewers that recommended it. That helped with my decision to buy this one.
