THE OYSTER PERPETUAL

Legendary Watches

The front-runner in a collection of legendary watches, the Oyster is the most recognized and most easily recognizable of watches.  Over time it has become an archetype.  The Oyster benefits from all the technology and know-how of Rolex.  Aesthetically, these models have evolved subtly over the years, but their unmistakable identity has always been respected.

THE ORIGINS

Hans Wilsdorf

The history of Rolex is inextricably linked to the visionary spirit of Hans Wilsdorf, its founder.  The young man entered the world of Swiss watchmaking in the early 20th century at a time when the pocket watch was the order of the day.  He began to dream of a watch worn on the wrist.  Wristwatches were not very precise but Hans Wilsdorf forsaw that they could become not only elegant, but also reliable.

To convince the public of the reliability of his resolutely innovative timepieces, he equipped them with small, very precise movements manufactured by a Swiss watchmaking company in Bienne.

The Quest for Chronometric Precision

Rolex first concentrated on the quality of the movements.  The relentless quest for chronometric precision rapidly led to success.  In 1910, a Rolex watch became the first wristwatch in the world to receive a Swiss certificate of precision, granted by the Official Watch Rating Centre in Bienne.

Four years later, in 1914, Kew Observatory in Great Britain awarded a Rolex wristwatch a class “A” precision certificate, a distinction which until that point in time had been reserved exclusively for marine chronometers.  From that date forward, the Rolex wristwatch was synonymous with precision.

The Birth of The Waterproof Watch

In 1926, a major step was taken with the invention of the world’s first waterproof and dustproof wristwatch.  This watch named the “Oyster” – featured a hermetically sealed case which provided optimal protection for the movement.

Waterproof, Dustproof, Coldproof

A year after its creation, in 1927, the Oyster crossed the English Channel, worn by a young English swimmer, Mercedes Gleitze.  At the end of her swim, which lasted over 10 hours, the watch remained in perfect working order.  To celebrate this landmark event, Hans Wilsdorf published an advertisement on the front page of the Daily Mail proclaiming the success of the waterproof watch.  The triumph led to the concept of the Testimonee, adventurous men and women, achievers whose exploits and daring would, in time, become so closely associated with the superiority of the Rolex brand.

A Living Laboratory

Rolex recognised the formidable opportunity to test, fine-tune and showcase the technical performance of the Oyster in different arenas.  The worlds of sport, aviation, motor racing and expeditions constituted living laboratories for the watches’ countless technical attributes.

In the realm of motor racing, a beautiful partnership was developed in the 1930s between Rolex and Sir Malcolm Campbell: on 4 September 1935, at the wheel of his Bluebird, this champion of champions set a land speed record of over 300 miles per hour (approximately 484 km/h) at Utah’s Bonneville Speedway.

The Self-Winding Movement

The Oyster soon boasted yet another outstanding feature.  In 1931, Rolex invented and patented the world’s first self-winding mechanism with a Perpetual rotor.  This ingenious system is at the origin of every modern automatic watch.

AN OBSESSION WITH PERFECTION

The Superlative Chronometer

The four simple words SUPERLATIVE CHRONOMETER OFFICIALLY CERTIFIED engraved on the timepiece’s dial mean that the movement of this watch has endured 15 days and nights of testing by the COSC (Controle Officiel Suisse des Chronometres), an independent not-for-profit association.  To receive COSC certification – a watch must demonstrate extreme precision in a variety of positions and temperatures – the standard level of quality for every Rolex Chronometer.

The Oyster Case

Very few people in the world are allowed inside a Rolex Oyster.  Only authorized Rolex retailers have the necessary know-how, skills and equipment to gain access.  Hermetically  sealed to the case with a massive torque of five Newton metres, the back of any Oyster, as this caseback demonstrates, creates an environment that protects the movement from shocks, pressure, dust, water and any other intrusive element.

The Oyster Perpetual Movement

The self-winding mechanism consists of a half-moon-shaped oscillating weight, which pivots freely on its central axle, in one direction, then the other with the natural movements of the wrist.  It transmits uninterrupted natural energy to the watch.  The oscillations of the weight create energy which is stored in the mainspring.  Today, a Rolex watch enjoys an autonomy of approximately 50 hours.  The perpetual rotor system of the Oyster movements is recognizable by two red reversing wheels that allow the rewinding of the movement regardless of the rotation direction of the oscillating weight.

904L Steel

Rolex uses 904L steel for its steel watch cases.  904L is usually reserved for the chemical industry, where maximum resistance against corrosion proves essential.  In this manner, 904L perfectly complements the other precious metals used by Rolex.  A super alloy, 904L is unimaginably resistant and able to be polished to a high degree.

Diamonds. And More.

A true jewel, the gem-set Oyster is very wearable luxury, well suited to any situation.  Indeed, the Oyster is meticulously designed with absolute attention to detail in the pursuit of perfection.

THE DATEJUST

The Classic Watch

The Oyster Perpetual Datejust is the ultimate reference chosen by those who believe in timeless elegance.

THE ORIGINS

1945

The First Datejust

In 1945 at the dawn of a new era of prosperity, Rolex launched the first Datejust.  The inaugural model with its waterproofness, streamlined elegance and date aperture on the face of the watch, was a timepiece ahead of its time.

The Mystery Man

In 1947, commemorating the brand’s 100,000th officially certified chronometer, Hans Wilsdorf presented that selfsame Datejust to an illustrious gentleman he described as one of the greatest figures of our time.  To this day, his identity has never been revealed.  ROLEX 1950s ADVERTISING

AN OBSESSION WITH PERFECTION

First Date

In the earliest models of the Datejust, the date would begin to change some hours before its midnight rendezvous.  In 1953, the date-change mechanism became instantaneous, and the date aperture was enhanced with a Cyclops lens enabling magnification of the date by two and half times for easy reading.

The Fluted Bezel

In the beginning, the Oyster bezel fluting had a functional purpose: it served to screw the bezel onto the case helping to ensure the waterproofness of the watch.  The fluting was, furthermore, identical to the fluting on the caseback, which was also screwed onto the case for the same reason, using specific Rolex tools.  The bezel evolved over time and later would be friction fitted onto the crystal and the case.  The fluting became a purely aesthetic element, a genuine Rolex signature feature.  A mark of distinction that is only available on yellow, Everose or white gold models.

Rolesor

As far back as the 1920s, Rolex watches were available with a two-tone Bicolore gold case: mostly yellow or red gold paired with white gold or platinum.  In 1993 the association of gold and steel was registered by Rolex under the name Rolesor.  Three years after the launch of the Oyster perpetual Datejust in 1945, the model was presented for the first time in Rolesor.  It met with immediate success, achieving the status of a legendary watch distinguishable at a glance.  Today, the Datejust in Rolesor is available in various combinations: steel with white, yellow or Everose gold.

Jubilee, Oyster, Pearlmaster…

Almost as much work goes into creating the Rolex bracelet as the Rolex movement.  Its over 100 moving parts are conceived and crafted simultaneously to ensure perfect homogeneity and fluidity.  Edges are sculpted and smoothed for comfort.  The clasp is designed for easier opening and closing.  The length can also be individually adjusted, providing perfect fit.  But only after it is tested under some of the most extreme conditions does it earn the right to be called a Rolex bracelet.

THE COSMOGRAPH DAYTONA

The Driver’s Watch

The Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona is the ultimate reference for those with a passion for driving.  And elegance.

THE ORIGINS

Sir Malcom Campbell

As early as the 1930s, Rolex was already producing its first chronographs.  In 1935, while automobile technology was still in its early stages, British daredevil Sir Malcolm Campbell, with a Rolex on his wrist, set the world land speed record and entered history by exceeding 300 miles (484 kilometres) per hour in his famous “Bluebird”.  An extraordinary achievement for the times!  ROLEX 1930s ADVERTISING

Rolex 24 at Daytona

In racing, sustaining top speeds for extended periods of time is routine.  But for 24 hours straight, on a track only 20% illuminated throughout the night?  This takes a rare caliber of competitor, and is what makes the Rolex 24 At Daytona, at Daytona International Speedway, one of the sport’s most challenging events.  A marathon of speed and patience, drivers from all walks of racing converge for the honor to compete.  Proper rest and resilient machine are crucial.  And since 1962 the debate has been this: what’s harder making it around the track, or around the clock?

Sir Jackie Stewart

Goodwood 1964.  Team bosses are amazed as a young Scot, testing an F3 Cooper for the very first time, beats lap time after lap time set by a leading formula 1 driver.  So begins the career of John Young “Jackie” Stewart.  A career that brings 27 wins in 99 starts and three Formula 1 World Championships.  In addition he’s been a marksman, a team owner and a campaigner for dyslexia awareness.  But possibly his greatest victory came from almost single-handedly revolutionizing motor sport safety.  So, although Sir Jackie himself may have retired from racing, the mark he’s left remains as visible as ever.

AN OBSESSION WITH PERFECTION

On-Board Instrumentation

The Cosmograph Daytona was designed as the ultimate timing tool for drivers in endurance races.  While the central sweep seconds hand allow an accurate reading of 1/8 second, the two counters at 9 and 3 o’clock respectively measure time in hour and minute increments, allowing the driver to map his course times accurately and determine how he must drive in order to achieve victory.

4130 Chronograph Movement

Inside the elegantly designed exterior, the Cosmograph Daytona is a masterpiece of watchmaking art.  The 4130 chronograph caliber movement was conceived and assembled exclusively by Rolex in 2000 for the Cosmograph Daytona and incorporates just 290 components – far fewer than a standard chronograph – making it a much admired symphony of simplicity.  It has a 72-hour Power reserve (66 hours if the stopwatch is in use) and inside, the blue Parachrom hairspring-made from a unique alloy impervious to magnetic fields-gives it up to 10 times more resistance to shocks than conventional hairsprings.

Tachymeter

The Daytona’s engraved bezel can be used as a tachymeter to calculate speed by measuring elapsed time over a predetermined distance.  The Cosmograph Daytona is therefore a perfect instrument for measuring speed of up to 400 units per hour whether expressed in kilometers or miles.

Start. Drive. Stop

At Rolex, form and function work together.  Rolex engineers have applied the most advanced technologies to craft the perfect spring to activate the chronograph mechanism when finger pressure is exerted on the pushers.  The result is not only reliable operation of the chronograph, but also a crisp, clear “click”, well-know by the wearers of this one-of-a-kind timepiece.

SPIRIT OF DAYTONA

Le Mans 24 Hours

Those who have raced Le Mans will tell you this: the gruelling 5,000-kilometre race is not merely a competition, but a test of will.  See how well your reflexes respond as you travel through the dark of night at speeds of up to 350km/h.  The challenge is so all-encompassing that it’s been known to entirely drain participants – both physically and emotionally.  So how exhausting is a win?  Le Mans legend Hurley Haywood once claimed: “If you have on ounce of energy left, then you haven’t done your job properly.”
